History of the Show

1841
The Orsett Show began life as "The Orsett Agricultural Association and Labourers' Friend Society" in 1841, and started very simply as a ploughing match. When the squire of the village Mr R. B. Wingfield died in 1880, the show died with him.

1895
orsett-hall-old-ol-dThe new squire Captain T. C. Douglas Whitmore and his son Francis revived the Orsett Show in 1895 and started the "Orsett and District Cottage Garden and Agricultural Society".Show was held in the park at Orsett Hall and continued to prosper until the outbreak of the First World War.

1919
The show was restarted on the 13th September 1919, when classes for vegetables and horses in the Grand Ring were introduced.

1926
The local Thurrock Gazette ran a feature on the Orsett Show in their "Down Memory Lane" section of the newspaper in 2012.  Below is part if that article:

"The 1926 advert for the Orsett & District Annual Show, held on Wednesday, September 9, gives events including horse driving and leaping, dairy cattle, Stanford Town Band, catering by Harrods’s, at reasonable rates, dancing in the evening while buses from Grays will be running, cars accommodated at various prices!

"I am always amazed by the diverse range of classes beyond what you expect today, including table decorations, long service award to domestic servant, horseman and labourer.

"In the horticulture section there was lots of competition for the Mangle Wurzels section including separate classes for gold, yellow intermediate and red intermediate and further prizes for a plot of Mangold Wurzels.

"My featured photograph (Sepia, first above) gives a flavour to the arena, tentage and event, held to the rear of Orsett Hall thanks to Colonel Whitmore’s patronage and presidency of the show."

1939

1946-1950
On Wednesday 4th September 1946 the Show once again returned, with Horse and Pig sections in addition to the Horticultural Show. 1947 saw the introduction of an Agricultural section, the return of Cattle Classes and a record attendance of 7,000. In 1949 the Show changed to a Saturday, and introduced a Fur and Feather section.

The Thurrock Gazette report of the 44th show in 1950 included facts on visitors and entries to the show "Attended by 8,000 people in about 590 cars and 575 mixed cycles and motor bikes.

"The entries into this year’s show was 1,000 horticultural, 160 horses, 94 cattle, 67 pigs, 156 entries to the agricultural section and 378 in the fur and feather sections! The special arena event was a daring motorcycle display of acrobatics by the Royal Corps of Signals.

"Further features of the show were the arrival of the Essex Union Foxhounds and the music of the Grays Temperance Silver Prize Band kept the crowds entertained. The Orsett Show committee was once again indebted to Sir Francis Whitmore, of Orsett Hall, for providing the venue, in the grounds behind the hall.

"My featured photograph (Black & White, second above) is of the Grand Parade of prize winners. The agricultural show brought out the best in farming techniques and I note some of the local farmers and farms who won in various categories – Mr W O Watt, Heath Place Farm, Orsett Fruit Farm, G Squire, Hassingbrook Hall, Stanford-le-Hope, Mr F J Ockendon, Mr C H Cole & Sons, Mill House, West Tilbury, Mr D F Jessop, Biggin Farm, Chadwell St Mary, Mr P N Gotts, Stone Hall, Bulphan, Mr N P Smith, Broadhope Farm, Stanford-le-Hope, Mr T Crawford, Stifford Clays Farm, North Stifford, Mr E Bedell, Barnards Farm, East Horndon, Mr J Pinkerton, Wick Place, Bulphan."

1968
The Orsett Estate was sold in 1968 and Sir John Whitmore left Orsett Hall, resigning the presidency which had been in the family since 1895. In the following years, the land at Orsett Hall was sold and new site in Rectory Road Orsett was acquired by Orsett Show Ground Limited to provide the Show with a permanent Show Ground and its regular date of 'The First Saturday In September'.
